It’s been a long, painful road watching Konstantin work his way into Maggie’s life on Days of Our Lives. It’s seemed like practically everyone but her has seen him for the con he is, and viewers have had to watch him grow ever closer to a woman who, we all know, should have spotted him for the creep he is. But now they’re getting married and Konstantin is about to get everything he could ever want — so long as he can get rid of that pesky prenup.
That’s what he wants Theresa to get rid of in a bafflingly impossible demand, threatening to take her down unless she figures out a way to give him unfettered access to Maggie’s fortune. But besides it being practically impossible, Theresa hates just about everything Konstantin is doing and pushing her to do.
Back when they cooked up this plan in Greece, it was only supposed to involve Alex, and Konstantin was to remain back home. Then he showed up in Salem and decided that he and Theresa would take Victor’s entire fortune, with him going after Maggie’s half, while Theresa went after Alex’s. Well, technically, Xander’s, but that’s a problem for another day.
Konstantin’s greed, though, may be his downfall. Because Theresa has a serious problem with him preying on Maggie. As she told her partner in crime, Victor’s widow is her friend and sponsor and Theresa doesn’t like victimizing her one bit. In fact, Emily O’Brien told Soap Opera Digest, “she hates it. Theresa cringes at every charm that he puts on with her.”
That would be bad enough, but even their original plan is proving more difficult to accomplish that Theresa thought. It’s not that she doubts she can win Alex over (though Kristen’s plan to make Theresa jealous is definitely working), but the blonde has developed feelings for him, which are “genuine,” O’Brien insisted to SOD.
Yes, at first she was just hot and bothered since he was so good looking, “but then she started feeling something for him. Then guilt came in, and he was there for her when she relapsed, and she’s been able to be vulnerable around him…Theresa ends up being torn, because now her emotions are really entwined in this kind of love triangle, and what she’s feeling for Alex is genuine.”
If Konstantin wasn’t there to push and threaten her, would Theresa even be going through with this scheme? That’s tough to say, but O’Brien is sure of one thing: “Theresa is riddled with guilt every day. She’s a complicated one. I think she’s waiting for time to pass and things to just sort of fizzle away and disappear, but nothing ever happens that way.”
No, nothing ever does and sooner or later she’ll have to face that reality. And if the guilt towards both Alex and Maggie gets the best of her when it does, Theresa may end up doing the right thing and confessing everything. It’ll almost certainly mean the end of her life in Salem, but she’ll save two people she cares about in the process.
Theresa, as O’Brien said, is complicated. And Konstantin may end up being unpleasantly surprised if he pushed her past the point of what she can stand.
