From Motocross Dreams to Soap Stardom: Mark Grossman’s Journey to The Young and the Restless

Hello, everyone, and welcome back to my channel! I hope you’re all having a wonderful day. Before we dive into today’s topic, please take a moment to hit that subscribe button—it means the world to me! Today, we’re exploring the fascinating career journey of soap star Mark Grossman, known for his role as Adam Newman on The Young and the Restless. It’s no surprise that many celebrities auditioned for various roles early in their daytime TV careers. Some landed their dream parts right away, while others, like Grossman, took a more winding path, appearing as different characters across multiple soaps and even networks.

In a recent interview on General Hospital star Maurice Benard’s State of Mind podcast, Grossman opened up about his unexpected road to soap opera fame. Believe it or not, he once auditioned for a role on Benard’s own show, General Hospital. So, let’s rewind and see where it all began.

Grossman’s original dream wasn’t to act—it was to become a professional motocross racer. However, when that didn’t work out, he pivoted to modeling. While signed with his first agency, he discovered they also handled acting opportunities. Curious and ambitious, he asked to be sent out on auditions, despite not even knowing what a monologue was at the time. Those early auditions took place in Arizona, where he lived before making the leap to Los Angeles.

Once in LA, Grossman began booking projects, but his entry into daytime television was anything but straightforward. “I had auditioned for The Young and the Restless at least one other time and General Hospital a couple of times,” he shared during the podcast. He gave a special shoutout to General Hospital’s casting director, Mark Teschner, who took a chance on him and brought him to the producers. “He has a special place in my heart,” Grossman said, reflecting on how Teschner’s support stood out. “I think I read for them a couple of times, as well as Y&R, before landing the legacy role of Adam.”

Landing the part of Adam Newman on The Young and the Restless was a turning point, but Grossman admitted he felt completely out of his depth at first. “I didn’t know my ass from my elbow because I had never been on a soap set with all the little sets,” he confessed. The fast-paced world of daytime TV was overwhelming, especially when his screen test was squeezed in between scenes. And who could blame him for feeling the pressure? He tested alongside three of the show’s biggest stars: Sharon Case (Sharon), Joshua Morrow (Nick), and Gina Tognoni (ex-Phyllis). “I was just so overwhelmed,” he recalled. You can hear more about this whirlwind experience in the full State of Mind interview.

While Grossman has settled into his iconic role on CBS, it’s fun to imagine a crossover. What if Adam Newman made a pit stop in Port Charles, the fictional setting of General Hospital? Though a CBS/ABC crossover seems unlikely, the idea of seeing Grossman’s character shake things up on a different network is certainly intriguing.

Mark Grossman’s journey—from motocross hopeful to soap opera standout—proves that sometimes the best paths in life are the ones you least expect. What do you think—would you like to see Adam cross over to General Hospital? Let me know in the comments below!
