Critic’s Review Hits and Misses: Week of November 11-15
Critic’s Review Hits and Misses: Week of November 11-15
The week’s biggest hits and misses on all four soaps, DAYS, Y&R, GH, and B&B.
Hits and Misses
What we think worked and didn’t work.
General Hospital
MISS: Kristina forgets there was ever a surrogacy plan. Kristina (Kate Mansi) is understandably grieving the baby she lost. Of course, it will affect her. But she still calls the baby Adela and talks about not getting to mother her. That was never the plan. And she has never taken into account that TJ (Tajh Bellow) was also that baby’s biological parent. It’s maddening.
MISS: Anna wants honesty from Jason. “Do all your friendships involve you being so evasive?” Yes, they do, Anna (Finola Hughes). Get used to it. Why is she struggling so hard to keep this friendship with Jason (Steve Burton) going?
HIT: Charles Mesure. His Brennan keeps people on their toes. And he’s super sarcastic and not afraid to say anything in a good way.
HIT: Rick Hearst. His Ric keeps people on their toes. And he’s super sarcastic and not afraid to say anything in a deliciously bad way. Also, he flinches when poked. Just ask Jason.
MISS: Lucky laments Sam. Lucky (Jonathan Jackson) wished Lulu’s life hadn’t cost Sam’s. But he said this as if Sam (Kelly Monaco) were simply some acquaintance. Too bad that for this story, the show couldn’t have temporarily cast Greg Vaughan, AKA the Lucky that actually dated Sam. #LuSamNeverForget
How Do You Feel About This Update?
MISS: Lucky wants to leave town. Why do they keep going this route with Lucky? We all know he’ll stick around. Knowing he wants to leave so bad is hurting the character. THANK YOU, Show, for letting Liz (Rebecca Herbst) let loose on Lucky regarding leaving town and leaving Aiden.
HIT/MISS: Holly and Robert’s goodbye. It had all the emotions plus the romantic and epic Casablanca send-off. The MISS is that Holly (Emma Samms) and Robert (Tristan Rogers) had just been established as Sasha’s (Sofia Mattsson) parents, and now they both hightailed it out of town. No more parent/daughter scenes…at least for now.
HIT: Jason gives Drew a massive beatdown. We felt those punches. It looked like they hurt. And it was a great counter to all those scenes where Drew (Cameron Mathison) and Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) talked and touched each other and acted like they were more than they actually are.
HIT: Trina and Kai. Who knows where this is all leading, but at least Trina (Tabyana Ali) and Kai (Jens Austin Astrup) looked good together.
MISS: Drew wants Michael to take over Aurora Media. He gave Curtis (Donnell Turner) a taste of corporate power and then wanted to take it away. When he’s doing a great job and he’s loving the work? What’s that all about? Also, Drew wanted Michael (Chad Duell) to handle ELQ and Aurora and make sure to shut Ned (Wally Kurth) out of the top position. Hard pass to all of his decisions.
The Young and the Restless
MISS: Victor’s control freak ways know no bounds. Victor (Eric Braeden) continued his quest to push Lily (Christel Khalil) back to Winters, even though that’s not where she wanted to be. It’s what he’s decided, so that’s what must happen. And then he pretty much convinced Jill (Jess Walton) that Winters is where Lily should be. What? Lily was always her girl!
HIT: Victor and Jill finally talk. We’ve missed Jill, so it was great to see her in Genoa City mixing it up with Victor.
MISS: JIll sells Victor Chancellor. How did this happen so quickly? However, the best thing about this sale is that the name goes back to Chancellor. Sorry, Billy (Jason Thompson).
HIT: Y&R’s Social Media video Kill, Marry, Make a Sandwich With. This was fun and informative. More, please. Christel Khalil and Joshua Morrow were especially great. And we like their ideas.
HIT: Ray Wise and Colleen Zenk are back. This development was unexpected but welcome.
MISS: Jordan and Ian mess with Sharon (Sharon Case) and Phyllis (Michelle Stafford). Here’s the thing. We’re not sure how these two made this happen or even how they got out of prison. But why such a slow burn? On top of that, aren’t they going after Victor? They have that enemy in common.
HIT: Devon (Bryton James) gives Ashley his grandmother’s charm necklace. What a sweet and touching gesture. It was great to see Ashley (Eileen Davidson) back in GC.
HIT: The wedding was beautiful. Coupled with Phyllis’s car accident, it made for a memorable 13,000th episode.
The Bold and the Beautiful
HIT: Ivy’s (Ashleigh Brewer) jewelry line is a go. Frankly, it was one of Carter’s (Lawrence Saint-Victor) better ideas. As a result, it’s refreshing to see more people at Forrester, especially since Hope (Annika Noelle) was given the boot.
HIT: Ivy knows about Electra’s past. That was a little unexpected, in a good way. The fact that it’s not just Electra’s (Laneya Grace) secret is a good thing. However, it’s also a MISS. Why did Ivy want Electra’s photo plastered everywhere online if she knew about her past?
MISS: Carter’s continued defense of HFTF. At this point, Carter needs to scale back his spirited and passionate defense. It wasn’t going anywhere, and, honestly, why did he think he could talk Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) into changing her mind?
HIT: Luna and Bill’s story briefly continued. So far, on the last two Fridays, B&B has dropped Bill (Don Diamont) and Luna (Lisa Yamada) updates on us. She keeps sending him letters from jail. He burned the first one. He wadded up and threw the second letter. Meanwhile, she’s still smirking evilly from behind bars. What’s going to happen?
MISS: Taylor says her heart follows Ridge. Taylor (Rebecca Budig) is so proud when she says it to Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang). But in the next breath, she says she’s not after Ridge (Thorsten Kaye). But that doesn’t compute. It feels like she’s lying.
JURY’S OUT: Carter and Hope potentially taking over Forrester Creations. This LLC tax document business seems like an odd way to take over an entire company without anyone knowing. Where’s the action? What happened to hostile takeovers? Better yet, quit Forrester and start a rival company. We need to see more before we render any judgment.
MISS: Ridge telling Carter to stay in his lane. Ridge shut his best friend’s/Forrester COO’s opinions and ideas down by basically saying that Carter needed to worry about the tax/LLC documents. That’s what his job was. Not a good look.
HIT: Mixing things up. This week, at least, B&B played the Hope and Carter story, the Will (Crew Morrow) and Electra adorableness, Electra’s past, and a little bit of Bill and Luna. Of course, they threw some Taylor and Brooke discussing Ridge into the mix, too. The point is that the focus was on more than one story, and that was very much appreciated.
Days of Our Lives
HIT: Brady gets the serum for Sarah. This is what needed to happen. No deal for Titan needed. Kristen should have given Xander (Paul Telfer) and Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) the serum without any strings. Brady (Eric Martsolf) did good.
HIT: Kate and Philip working together. As great as Vivian (Louise Sorel) is, it’s kind of fun to see Kate (Lauren Koslow) get back a little of her dark side. She knows about the forged letter, and she’s running with it. And now she and Philip (John-Paul Lavoisier) are going to potentially cause chaos. Love it.
MISS: Sarah just letting Xander’s attempted murder of Philip slide. He shot the gun, Sarah! Sure, there were no bullets. And sure, Philip is not innocent in this, but…Xander shot the gun!
MISS: Tate says Holly’s (Ashley Puzemis) name while making out with Sophia (Madelyn Kientz). Right now, Tate’s (Leo Howard) making all the wrong decisions.
HIT: Sophia dumped Tate. This was the right thing for Sophia to do. He called her Holly!
JURY’s OUT: Brady and Ava. We’re starting to feel Brady and Ava (Tamara Braun) more, but we’re not ready to jump on board the Brava wagon just yet.
HIT: Rafe (Galen Gering) and Jada (Elia Cantu) engagement. Yes, a DAYS couple experiencing happiness. The proposal was cute and well-earned, even though it took place in the hospital.
HIT and MISS: Paulina decides to keep Jada in the top cop job. At the Pub, Mayor Paulina Price (Jackée Harry) told Rafe and Jada that she was keeping Jada as the Salem Poice Commissioner. The HIT is that Jada deserves this job. The MISS is that this was a whack way for it to happen. As a result, Rafe might explore suing the city, and he decided to quit the force. What a mess.
MISS: Gabi blames EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) for her end-of-marriage woes. Gabi (Cherie Jimenez) needs to take responsibility for her own actions and choices.
MISS: Johnny cheated on Chanel (Raven Bowens) with Joy. Why, DAYS? Why???? We weren’t quite sure what really happened between Johnny (Carson Boatman) and Joy (AlexAnn Hopkins), but now we are. The fact that they cheated is upsetting. We need the show to take this back, pretty please.
